Abstract
This study aims to examine the effects of living arrangement on drinking behaviors and analyze if living arrangement has differential effects depending on gender and age. 2010 Korean Health and Nutrition Survey data were analyzed for this study. Beyond previous studies, we measure 8 different types of living arrangement according to whether or not respondents live with spouses, parents, and/or offsprings. The findings show that living arrangement has differential effects depending on gender and age. The subsample analysis across men and women shows that all types of living arrangement without spouses are associated with higher level of drinking behavior. Also, the interaction effects between age and living arrangement for men and women are detected. Although age is negatively associated with drinking in general, for men living with parents increases drinking relative to living with offsprings as age increases. For women, however, living with parents and offsprings dramatically decreases drinking as age increases compared with those who live with spouses only. Finally, we discuss the findings based on different gender-related norms and responsibilities over the life course and social control of drinking.
